I have owned this car since 1999. 5 years ago I decided to swap a 454 engine in the car and just have fun with it. The shop that was going to do the work suddenly shut down and I had to tow the car home and bring the motor and parts home in an enclosed horse trailer. That became the end of the project and now I must move everything out.
The engine and transmission are out of the car and needs to be installed. It includes a refreshed 454 big block motor, re-worked by retired local racer and professional engine builder. It comes with a rebuilt 700-R4 overdrive transmission which has been built for the 454 power and 2200 stall converter. The engine is a mild build with a nice lope. Estimated at 425-430 horsepower. The El Camino is in good driver condition. The interior needs work and the motor and transmission needs to be installed.
The engine started with a 1978 454 (#14015443) from a motorhome with 30k original miles. Cylinders were honed, rear main seal replaced, freeze plugs replaced. High performance 396/427 heads (#3917215) were rebuilt. Mild high performance cam (226/226 duration, 536 lift) and roller rockers installed, and an Edelbrock Q-jet performance intake manifold.
